... just wanted to do a little thing .. ive heard alot of ppl say dsl is better because of blah blah blah and its a deicated thing. well u gotta live within 2 mile sof the dsl company and any farther ur connections gonna suck. cable gets u a stable connection no matter how far u are away ... and niether dsl or cable is a deicated connection ... or so ive heard from my cable company i use RR (road runner) ... so living 2 miles from ur dsl would get faster sppeds but no 1 wants to move 2 or 3 mile sfora good service ... so cable pays of cause u can b quite a distance away from its servers and havea good connection unless its crammed with ppl on it ... i live almost 10 or 20 miles form my provider but i dont think that matters with cable

Posted by: SKYHN

I wouldnt say one is better than the other. They both have nearly equal pros and cons.

Many cable providers now though have bandwidth limitations, and soon all cable will have them.

Posted by: -EG-raynor

... i agree like u said cable and dsl have there pros and cons ... but dsl sometimes lie to there customiers about there "deicated servers" when they really dont have deicated stuf outa there 2 or so mile range.. when cable still keeps the same speeds even if u live quitea distance ... but they both probably lie ... but havent seen anything about cables doing fraud .. fill me in if u c something like it

I think you mean "dedicated" servers.

Not really sure what you mean by that though. You connect with DSL through a Gateway in your area, which connects you to your service.

Posted by: -EG-raynor

doesnt deicated mean "deicated server" ... but dont cable and dsl use the exact same technogoly to do there stuff?? ...

Posted by: SKYHN

Theres no technical term "deicated". Its spelled "dedicated"

They dont use the same technology. Cable uses Coaxial Cable TV Lines and DSL can use Ethernet Lines or Standard Phone Lines that have Digital Signals enabled.

ooo .. hehe didnt catch that ... been up all day and night ... so its almost 24 hours with no sleep ... didnt catch that at all

Cable suffers from major packet loss no matter where you are. Going further away from the cable provider's local switch will make it even worse. Distance is ALWAYS a factor. Also, the speeds are capped much lower than the max so that when a few people do log on you don't notice the difference. If they uncapped the speed you'd probably be going 3-4 times faster until a few people logged on, then you'd be going how fast you are now.
DSL your speed doesn't get chopped every time someone else logs on. That's why it's dedicated, you go straight to the server and don't share your bandwidth with people. It also doesn't suffer from packet loss nearly as bad. Also, if the phone company says DSL is available, then they have installed a switch within the max distance from your house, so you needn't worry about that. The onyl downside to DSL is it usually isn't offered at as high a max speed as cable unless you pay more.

argh ... lots of stuff is floating around ... i dont no who to choose sides with ... cable company ... dsl ... swilo

Just choose one. Whatever you select..you will be happy with it I am sure.

I have cable, and would never go back to dial up. I haven't noticed any slow downs in my area.

Truth is, it all depends on location and service provider. You should be asking the people in your area how good the service is at your location. Sometimes, one service is far better then the other, other times, they are the same..then just go with price etc...

the reason we chose cable cause my mom gets 20$ off a month for being a teacher

I have had both DSL and Cable in the past year and a half.

I currently use cable(Opimum Online) after I switched from Verizon DSL. I was about 7,000ft to far from my phone Company when I had DSL. This would cause many disconnects and I could not get on at night. My speeds for DSL were also capped at about 768kbps/128kbps. The price was also $50 a month, which is pretty expensive.

Now I have cable and it is so much better, it is faster and I am always connected. The speed cap is 10,000/1,000kb/s, which is amazingly fast for only $34 a month. I usually download at 1MB/S.

So I like Cable better then DSL. There are a lot of people who get better speeds with DSL. Maybe I am just lucky with OOL

Your download speed : 8261777 bps, or 8261 kbps.
A 1008.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 943544 bps, or 943 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

heh, dsl is dedicated to the server. after that, its not of course. dsl offers more stable, if slower speeds. better for gaming and peak period usage.
cable is great if you can use it at 3 am for large downloads

Posted by: Bobaroo

So many people so that cable slows down with the amount of people on the node. I have not had any slowdowns ever. I have had cable for a year and I have had the same speeds, and maybe a little faster now since day 1.

yo i have cable and i love it. my friends hav dsl and they are dont like it so much. i really dont know much on dsl.

but my cable downloads at 350-600 kb/s never lower sometimes higher. i think thats great speed. im in north jersey with optimum online. it rocks

Another DSL and Cable debate...

Since I know a fair amount about both I'll explain and you can make your own decisions...

DSL and Cable both run over copper. DSL is generally over 24 to 28 AWG CAT-3 wiring while Cable is usually over RG59 or similar Coax.

Now onto the big differences. Cable has repeaters which allow them to magnify the signal in a sense to allow longer loops. This is one of the advantages to cable. Also, cable companies generally have higher speed tiers/caps. Which means for pure downloading, cable may be faster. But then you get into FAP or Fair Access Policies or usage caps which basically limits how much you can download. So you may be able to download 200 meg a month at 4 meg a sec. Cable is shared at the Cable CO which means "they have a max of X bandwidth, all users consume this bandwidth as it is distributed". Broken down, it simply means when you have a lot of people online your connection will start lagging.

Onto DSL..

DSL is dedicated all the way to the DSL router (Redback/Juniper/Cisco or whatever). So The wire COs use an ATM transport which is always on. This is a layer 2 function and couldn't care less how much bandwidth you use as it's constantly transmitting ATM cells. Customers then are converted back to layer 3 (tcp/ip) at the DSL router. Generally these routers are fed by 2 to 3 OC3s or more. One of the biggest disadvantages to DSL is the fact that signal degrades quick and we cannot "boost" the signal. That is where RTs or Remote Terminals come in. They are like "mini-COs" in the field. These are little boxes with DSLAMs (DSL Access Multiplexors). These are fiber fed from the CO to allow DSL out as far as they need it. Only downside is, RTs cost about $500,000 to install new. Upgrading existing RTs can cost over $100,000 so it's still expensive.

So what does all this mean?

Cable is generally faster, higher pings, long loops, shared line, and has a FAP

DSL is generally a little slower, lower pings, shorter loops, dedicated circuits and no FAP.

So if you download a lot, cable may not be right for you. Also may not be great if you game. But if you simply want a lot of speed when you want it, this is the route to go.

DSL is great for large downloads, gaming, if you don't mind downloading at 1.5-6 mbps. Where cable is going around 2-8 mbps...

If you have any questions let me know.

Thanks,

Rick

That's true enough. Cox cable in my area is talking about making us pay more monthly to make things better, or to raise the bandwidth. Something along that line.
