Intel is heavily boasting the new Itanium 2 which will be released week. After noticing this article at Reuters, I searched for some more information from Intel. Here's a snip from a page at Intel briefly expressing improvements over the original Itanium:

Mechanical computer-aided design: For MSC.Nastran*, Intel anticipates that a single-processor Itanium 2-based system will perform 90 percent higher than a comparable Itanium-based system and two to four times as fast as a comparable UltraSparc III system.

The Itanium 2 will hold a 3mb L3 on-die cache and, according to Intel, should perform up to 2 times as fast as the Itanium.
