Say Goodbye to Win2k

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Full story over on the the Register. Lots of Microsoft bashing here, but I think most of it's valid.

Windows 2000 has been given nine months to live, as far as OEMs are concerned, and Microsoft is pressuring the PC companies to stop offering dual install Win2k/WinXP systems immediately.

The demise of dual install, which makes it easier and cheaper for OEMs to cater for customers in this position, will make life harder for everybody but Microsoft, and of itself will make the PC companies more inclined to drop Win2k. And as their contracts won't allow them to sell Win2k as of April 2003, well, there's less and less point in wriggling, isn't there, folks?

The moves will have an immediate impact on upgrade strategies and costs, and by a miraculous coincidence Microsoft's widely-hated Licensing 6.0 becomes The Law at the end of this month.

What about Windows 98?

This is going to be a tough downfall. Win2k is too largely accepted to lose so much so fast.

All I know is when MS stops supporting Windows 2000, I'll goto Linux before ever using Windows XP. MAybe the next OS will have all that online activation crap and bloatware gone. But until then, they can have it.

And it's not like I need XP for games. What games?

Well it was a Register article so I wouldn't hold too much faith in it.

i put like 0 faith in anything that comes from the register. so until i here that from a reliable source it wont effect my strategy for work

Hmm, seems like an awful early time to put Win2K out to stud... They are still installing Win98 OEM until about last year....

In Microsoft's view, it's not too early at all. They'll still support it, they just don't want it shipped anymore.

Why?

The XP licensing thing kicks in at the end of this month.

we are only starting to phase out NT Workstation 4.0 and move to Windows 2000 at work NOW

(this doesn't effect us though-- we have a special bigass license, and we blow away the OEM preinstalled stuff anyway)
geez

Here is a link to Microsoft's Lifecycle Guidlines.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle.asp

As you can see Win2k won't even hit it's extended phase till next March. So it won't be phased out right away. OEMS just won't be offering it on pre-installed systems any longer.
