they are going to clone (hopefully) a famous tree in russia. i hope its a success, id like to see them do that with some of the trees in new zealand that are dying off.

CLONE A TREE????

Posted by: Canis Lupus

I guess cloning specific "endangered" trees would be a good thing ... although just planting one would be infinitely cheaper

Posted by: -EG-raynor

lol ... it would b cheaper ... couldnt tell 1 from another

Posted by: redwench

indeed it would. but the trees in new zealand (dont ask me what theyre called) no longer reproduce, since the settlers literally killed that particular food chain. the few that are left are several hundred years old and dying.
cloning would be perfect for them.

ooo ... i didnt no about a tree that didnt reproduce anymorewouldnt the wind help the trees reproduce though .. throwing the seeds off

Posted by: Canis Lupus

since it can't reproduce, there wouldn't be any seeds to throw off

Posted by: redwench

um, in this case, one particular animal was required in a step of the reproductive process (the dodo, believe it or not ). it required the digestive process of said critter, which was the only one that ate the fruit.
i presume theyve tried to duplicate the procedure in the laboratory. its been a while since ive seen the program, maybe they found a way to make the seeds viable again.

why dont they just cut a small limb off and stick it in water and let it grow roots? ... or bring the dodo back lol(jk)

Find any old tree branch and put it in a bucket of water ... if it grows roots, let us know...

Posted by: Shalome

You can't do that with trees, Thee. Other plants, yes, but not seed-bearing trees.
