Why is it that people always overreact to what they don't/can't understand?

http://www.msnbc.com/news/780923.asp

So now hacking can land you life in prison. Now, maybe it's just me, but should hacking and the like be compared to the theft or burglary line of crimes? Certainly it has more in common.

I find it funny how many violent crimes won't even get you a life sentence, but streaming certain bits across the internet will.

Although - why should I be surprised? After all, hacking has to do with perceived lost money. As we all know, money is worth more than human life.

Nah, it's not hacking that will get you life in prison.

This "new" law is unnecessary and is largely a PR move. The new law just says that if you hack a system and it results in death, you can get life in prison. Examples:
1) Hacking the 911 system so no one can get emergency help -- if people die because of it, you get life in prison.
2) Hacking an air traffic control system, resulting in a plane crash and death. You get life in prison.
3) Hacking a lock-and-dam control system and opening the floodgates, creating a flood, resulting in deaths along the riverbanks. You get life in prison.

This is, of course, already covered in existing laws. All this does is to close a loophole that would allow the hacker to get off with a involuntary manslaughter charge and a two-year sentence, which could happen unless specific language is introduced.

Doesn't say that in the article.

I especially liked the order importance of items was given in this quote:
Quote:

“Until we secure our cyber infrastructure, a few keystrokes and an Internet connection is all one needs to disable the economy and endanger lives,” sponsor Lamar Smith, R-Tex., said earlier this year.

Oh, I liked these lines a lot...

"a few keystrokes and an Internet connection is all one needs to disable the economy and endanger lives"

hmmm... I always undestood hacking was a little more involved then "a few keystrokes"

“A mouse can be just as dangerous as a bullet or a bomb.”

Since when did serious hacking have anything to do with a mouse?

“A terrorist or criminal cyber attack could further harm our economy and critical infrastructure. It is imperative that the penalties and law enforcement capabilities are adequate to prevent and deter such attacks.”

Wouldn't this kind of terrorist be smart enough to run his hack from outside the country? What are they going to do to him then? Say 'come over here and try that'?

This has nothing to do with terrorism. It's another example of abusing america's idiotic paranioa that was sparked off by 9/11. Yes it was a trajedy, yes we needed to do something about it, but it's done and over now, and it is no excuse for some of the sorry stuff that has been being shoveled up by the government.

Edit: Wow I type slow

Nova, I'd think you'd be more disturbed by the wiretapping initiative that was passed as well.

Congressmen are always saying stupid things that they think will make good soundbites (like the mouse = bullets and bombs comment).

And the reporting in that article isn't the best. If you read the actual bill, the real meaning becomes clear. MSN isn't exactly high-quality, non-sensationalistic journalism, if ya know what I mean.

Sounded to me like the whole wiretapping of internet activities bit has more to do with what's going in and out of your computer. IMO, that is no big deal, because you can't really assume that any information you send out on the net is private anyway.

My rule of thumb is to never say or do anything on the net that you don't want public. Also, anyone even remotely intelligent who doesn't want something they do on the net tapped, will encrypt it anyway.

Yawn ... so much exaggeration and doomsday thinking ... typical of someone who has no idea how hacking really works ... he probably likes to listen to himself speak ...

“A mouse can be just as dangerous as a bullet or a bomb.”

LOL, so many catch phrases and poetic doomsayings, but not enough applicable knowledge to actually stop the alleged problem
