single player freezes during gameplay

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ive just got D2 and installed the full version. When playing the game, after about about 5 min (or randomly any time between 0 and 10 min) the game will freeze. The CD seems active as the music is still playing, however everything else stops. I cant even ctrl+alt+delete or exit, I have to turn off the computer and restart altogether!

If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated

The first things we'll need to know are:

What operating system do you have?
How fast is your processor?
How much RAM do you have?
What kind of video card do you have?
What kind of sound card do you have?

Here is the info...

Windows 98 second edition
Intel Pentium III ~500MHz
128MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 256
DirectSound (SB Live! Wave Out [1040])

Well, one thing to consider is the heat levels inside your computer. Make sure your computer isn't full of dust and that the fan is clean and working properly. Try taking the case off and running like that for a while.

Video cards can put out a lot of heat, which can freeze your computer like that.

Also list the IRQs for you deviced
right click on my computer
select properties
select device Manager
hit the properties button
what is using IRQs 3 to 13
do not bother listing any PCI IRQ stearing stuff

I also figured It was my computer over heating that was causing the freezing problem. After looking through the forums I found that thing about copying the music files into the D2 folder. Although my computer still freezes, I get about 1h of play time rather than 5 min.

I will try what you said about taking the cover off, I just don't know if my Dad will approve

~Just in case it helps here are my IRQ listings

03 - Communications Port (COM3)
04 - Communications Port (COM2)
05 - SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI (SMC1211 Series)
- IRQ Holder for PCI Steering

06 - Standard Floppy Disk Controller
07 - ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
08 - System CMOS/real time clock
09 - Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
- IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 - Creative SB Live! Value
- IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
11 - PCI Modem Enumerator
- NVIDIA GeForce 256 (Gateway - English)
- IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
12 - PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 - Numeric data processor

Try moving your modem card to a different PCI slot having your modem and Video card sharing the same IRQ is not good.

No card should be placed in the slot immediately under the AGP slot as that slot always shares the IRQ with the AGP slot.

How do I move my modem to a different PCI?

Posted by: Shalome

Are you comfortable working with the hardware inside your case? This is really a very simple thing to do: just open the case, find the card your modem is on (assuming you have an internal modem), and move it to a different PCI slot. (PCI is just the name of the long slots that modems and other cards fit into, as opposed to the shorter AGP slots for different kinds of cards.)

(The modem card will be the one with the phone jack on the back )

How would moving the modem help stop the freezing problem (just for insight!)?

Posted by: Shalome

Like tkron said, if the video card is in an AGP slot and the modem card is in the first PCI slot next to the AGP slot, the cards will share an IRQ by default. IRQ sharing between these cards can cause occasional conflicts resulting in freezing or crashing. If you move the modem card to a PCI slot that isn't right next to the AGP slot, the cards will no longer share an IRQ.

Well I tried what you said about moving the modem (I actually removed it!) and I do get a longer period of gameplay. However I still recieve the freezing problem after about 1 - 2 hours. Any reason for this?

Have you defragged recently? If not, do that.

How many programs do you have running in the background? Check your taskbar (hit ctrl-alt-del once) and list all the programs you have running.

Hmm, a lot of hardware tech advice but it looks like we are forgetting one simple thing. Have you check for patches lately at Blizzard? This may be the problem to your game crashing.

Chances favor the prepared mind!
