Scsi, CDRW and other probs

I've had a PC for over three years and I have a Advansys PCI Ultra Scsi (BIOS - v2.9M). Also in the PC I have a Yamaha CRW4416s writer as well as a cd rom drive. I haven't used the external scsi socket very much, but I know that the Yamaha writer is plugged into the scsi board inside. Only times I have used the ext. scsi socket is for a zip drive which I really use for my sampler. Recently I have tried connecting my Akai sampler to the ext. scsi socket on the PC and have successfully been able to transfer samples between them. However, since then I haven't had any reason to burn any cd's and when I got round to doing, I then noticed that my cd writer (H drive) was missing from the list under My Computer. The light on the actual Yamaha box is on, but there's no sign of it on the PC. I've looked in Device Manager, and its not there. There is just the one for the CD rom drive.
I've tried looking into downloading drivers, but have had no luck with the ones I've downloaded. I'm not really 100% as to what to do. I've tried the "Have Disk" bit when Adding New Hardware, but it doesn't recognise any target devices. I did a test with the Scsi board by plugging in my Zip drive and then booting up the PC and it comes up with "No Chip Found" message at the start. Same thing when I now plug my sampler in. Its making me think that the Scsi board is messed up some way, whether its ID numbers or something else. I've really no idea and its getting a bit desperate now. If you can help me out in any way, or advise me with anything I can check out then I would be very grateful. Incidentally, when I boot up the PC the first thing it says is "Advansys PCI Ultra SCSI Bus Host Adapter found etc", and it loads up okay when I don't plug anything into the external SCSI socket. Otherwise it says "No Chip Found" etc.
Please help me out as I'm running out of hairs to pull out.

sounds like something is going bad. but anyway, try disconnecting the writer, booting up comp normally. then shutdown, reconnect the writer, and reboot. that should force it to detect new hardware. if it doesnt, you have a problem.
but after 3 years, you definitely could have the mobo or scsi controller going. or you could just need to reinstall the OS. assuming you cant get it working again with the hardware installation, id try reinstalling the os, upgrading the bios, then if all else fails, upgrade the computer, its time anyway.

With these sort of things, you usually can not use both internal and external devices at the same time, if you want to burn a cd, shut down the pc, remove your external devices and start it up again.

Hmm...it could be a simple thing of SCSI termination and proper SCSI ID device numbering.
You should be able to use both internal and external SCSI devices so long as you make your first and last device terminated.
You see..when you use external devices..you need only terminate the last pheripheral on your chain. Sometimes, these devices have them built in. It is a given that there is a built in terminator on the card that you can turn on or off...read your manual..may be software or better yet..jumper. If you want to use internal..then you must make sure your first (or last..depending on how you look at it) internal device is properly terminated.
As well, make sure all your devices on the chain have proper non conflicitng ID numbers. The major problem with SCSI is that certain devices only work within a certain device number along the chain. I have encounterd this problem before in that my zip likes to be the last in the chain..or it won't show up in the SCSI cue. So you may have to play around with placement as well as ID numbers.
Also..you need to take the termination off your SCSI host card. It also has an ID #, traditionally 7..so you must take this into account when you configure your internal devices. Termination must be at the two ends of your chain.
Good luck

Thanks for all your comments and advice. I still haven't got very far. Have tried rebooting with driver unplugged and plugged again, with and without external sampler. But still nothing. Could it be a new scsi card that is next on my shopping list? I have yet to try and reinstall Windows which is my next step. Thanks again though for your suggestions. (Haven't reached sledgehammer option just yet ).
Cheers
Paul
