It keeps crashing

I have a Asus A7V266-E with a athlon xp 2100+ and a volcano 7+ heatsink and fan.when the fan is on high and I play warcraft 3 or some other cpu intensive game, my computer often freezes and the speakers issue a high pitched tone. When I check the CPU tempurature after such an occasion the temp is shockingly low, a mear 54 C, I've seen it run stable up to 63 C so I can't understand why it keeps crashing
my power supply is a AMD Reccomended Sparkle 400watt, my video card is a Geforce 2 GTS, I don't have any case fans but I keep a large personal fan aimed at the board. I have bios version 1010 beta
maybe the personal fan is blowing air accross the CPU thermometer making it give false readings?
I'm planning on getting a copper cold plate and installing a peltier, is that a good idea?
This is my dillema!! please give me some suggestions on how to fix this annoying problem, I don't want to have to underclock this thing by more than the 50 mhz I already did, its über annoying!!
thanks alot!

What kind of sound card do you have?

the obvious suggestion is that the heatsink is installed improperly. check that you have sufficient area of contact with the proper amount of thermal paste. too much or too little paste can be a problem.
you could also have a bad chip, or faulty temp probe. assuming that temperature is the reason its shutting down, of course.

how much is the right amount of thermal paste?

The right amount is just enough to completely cover the gray square in the middle of the chip ... you can apply some more to its outer edges, but don't go overboard and smother it like frosting on a cake ... and make sure the heatsink is making contact with the processor ...
As for peltier, it is only a good idea if you're willing to go for broke and risk voiding your processor (and mobo) warranty...

Peltiers are a bad idea IMO. Condensation likes to form on them, and thats a VERY bad thing.
So unless you live in an area with zero hummidity, or your willing to buy a new processor/motherboard if it frys from the condensation, then stick with an HSF combo.
