Need help with using a router as a gateway with cable service provided by Comcast. i have had a wireless LAN running for months until the modem went down.

After installing a Motorola sufrboard 4200, i could connect directly from a pc but not using the router. i tried several times to use the mac address from the connected pc to clone the router ( as I did before) but no luck.
Comcast support is the worst and they don't support LANs.They tell me they reset the IP every few weeks which, shouldn't matter since I am usinf DHCP . when connect through the router, I can ping my router and NIC but not the internet.

i believe they are dpoing something on their end to prevent this but, as I said, i have had this set up running for months before the new modem was installed.....

help

thanks

Okay, what are you using as a router?

Linksys cable/dsl wireless router,
thanks

When you set up the router, did you configure it to act as a DHCP server for your computers?

Is there a firewall on your router or on any of your computers? If you've got a firewall on your router, you need to set it up to allow traffic from Cox's DHCP server. If you've got firewalls on your computers, you need to set them to allow traffic from your router.

We've got Charter cable, a Motorola Surfboard, and a Linksys router. We had the same problem when we first set it up.

One major thing that always works for us when we're having trouble:

Turn everything off. No power to the router, the cable modem, or your computers. Turn them back on in this order: Cable modem (wait until all the lights come on), then router, then your computers.

cool, thanks. no firewalls installed. the router is set up to act as dhcp. I'll try the order of boot and see if that helps.
thanks again
