help with ms-dos compatibility mode
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

in my control panel devices thing, it says my performance is being killed by drive A being in ms-dos compatability mode.
However, I have no drive A. Yet windows thinks I have a removable floppy. How do I get rid of this?
I'm not sure if this relates to the same problem but I also get msgsrv32 not responding a lot. i tried doing a virus scan but my norton trial expired, and I can't do the housecall one because it gets to 95% updated and then stops and gives me a message about a client-side error. I then got a norton utilities cd from a friend, but I can't install nav from that because the setup program hangs as soon as I start it (the window never even comes up)
please help

For the "msgsrv32 Not Responding" problem, it could be a few different things (and it's not likely related to the 'compatibility mode' thing). The Microsoft Knowledgebase is a good resource if you know how to use it.
Knowledgebase Article #Q169987: When your computer is idle for a period of time and then stops responding (hangs), the Close Program dialog box may report that Msgsrv32 is not responding.
Other Knowledgebase articles referenceing "msgsrv32 Not Responding".

Sounds like the "compatibility mode" was a problem in vanilla installs of Win 95 and 98/98se. One of the common themes in the Knowledgebase about this problem seemed to be... "this problem was fixed in Windows Update release x.x." Go to the Windows Update center and click on "Product Update."
