Character migration

Being a support troll on the night shift, I have ample opportunity to play Diablo 2 at work (contrary to company policy, of course ). I have engineered a smokin' lethal amazon and she wants to come to a less repressive environment where she can punish Evil without fear of being spotted by supervisors. Does anyone know what I would have to do to transfer my character files to another computer and have Diablo 2 recognize the existance of these files?? I have tried to simply transfer the files to the save folder before and that was successful but the character wasn't listed in the single-player player select menu. . .
HELLLLLLP!!

You need to have the same version of Diablo2 at the place you're copying the chars too or (like you said) they won't show up.

Ok, Raynor, if you had read the only post in the thread, you would realize that I had already tried that. Please do all of us at the OTS.net forums a favor and stop posting without reading the thread. . .
Outlaw, I only play Diablo 2 expansion pack. Thanks for responding, though.

No I mean the game version, like both have to be 1.09.
If you have one that's (for example) 1.05 and you copy chars created with that version to your home which uses (example again) 1.09 then they won't show up.
Patching both to the newest version (1.09 right now) and then copying the chars would probably the easiest solution.

I always download the latest patch from the Blizzard site when I install, if I don't have it on CD already. In the case of the 1.09d patch, I do have it on CD.
Does anyone know how to move a character from one computer to another?? I believe it has to do with editing the registry but I don't like to do that unless I know what exactly I'm doing.

Angst I don't know if this will work..but I found this on the net in another forum.
"Make sure you're copying the files to exactly the same location as where they are in the first place. Also, make sure the game version is the same. Thirdly, make sure that after you've copied the files, check that the file(s) is not set to read only."
Much of this has been said already. I tried digging deeper, but no mention of what files one needs to transfer.
So, I looked at cheats, and found THIS . Not sure if this will help you, or worse, mess up your computer.
and...
THIS

In diablo1, your computer name had to be the same as well. Perhaps this is also the case in diablo 2?

Chako and Nova: At last!! People with helpful information!! Chako, I'm kinda wary of DL'ing third-party software for this kind of thing--I tried it in D1 and ended up with chop suey.
Anyway, I actually did some musing on the issue al solo and I came up with the following idea: create a character of the same name and type and then copy the migrating character files (source computer) over the newly-created files (destination computer). I'll keep you posted on how this works out. . .

Angst I know your concerns..and I share them.
However, I might be tempted to try it out with a sacrificial character first if nothing else works..just be sure to make a backup of the more important files in another folder on the HD...just in case.

Oh you need not worry. I've been burned on the data tip too many times to go hack-and-slash into a situation like this experiment. Please put the following on my tombstone:
Data should be two things: meaningful and prolific.

And there was much rejoicing. . . .
*muted half-felt cheer from the crowd*
It worked just as I thought it would. Now we know. . .
