I've been hearing that Windows XP has a lot of gliches and problems causing it to be a pain in the ***, and it really isn't worth having to deal with. On the other hand I know Win98 will be about 50x slower then XP. Are the problems that serious in XP, or have they been greatly exagerated? Please help me out so I can decide which one to load up.

i prefer windows millenium over 98 XP and W2K. I like WinME better for gaming and office apps than the other two.

If you are currently using Windows 95/98/Me or Windows NT 4.0, Windows XP will most likely be a worthwhile upgrade. You'll like the speed, security, and stability of XP, but may have some issues with hardware and software compatibility.

The new user interface is well suited for non technical computer users, home users may be better off buying a new PC with Windows XP preloaded rather than try to upgrade the hardware and OS on an older system. Businesses and power users that are already running Windows 2000 will probably not see a significant reason to upgrade.

speaking of ease of use in XP. i have it on a couple of computers at work and the folks using it arent the best of computer users and they find it extremely difficult to get used to and use. their main complaints are its interface is hard to use heh. soon as i get a few more licenses for winme or 98 im erasing those XP puters and putting easier to use OS on em for our staff stuck with XP. i dont see any improvement in speed over 98 escept in the area of boot time and winME beats XP in that. i have yet to find a worthwhile reason to change to XP for my home comp. i would not call XP an upgrade its more of a lateral move rather than a progression in my opinion. if u dont have a concrete reason to get xp i think ur wasting ur money.

Win98 isn't good for much anymore other then retro gaming. Its just to unstable. I'd wind up rebooting 5-6 times a day with this OS.

WinME sucks for just about everything from my experience. Since you can't use it for older dos-based games, and it likes to be a memory hog. I'd wind up rebooting 9-10 times a day with this OS.

Win2k Pro is my current OS, its great for just about everything. Its only crashed twice since I installed it a few months ago, and both times were because of an improper software installation. I normally don't reboot with this OS< and when I do, its because either drivers require it, or an installation does. I've yet to have to reboot for reasons other then these.

WinXP is probably the best current OS for gaming, since it can run some older do-based games (Not all). Its rather bloated to start out with, but you can disable or simply choose not to install most of the bloatware. I'd usually reboot 1-2 times a day with this OS.

WinXP also has an authorization scheme, change to much of your hardware, and windows will think its been installed on another machine, and require you to re-authorize your product.

Also note that if you don't update to XP now, you'll be forced to sooner or later, when MS decides to stop supporting your version of windows.

This is just MY personal experience, I'm sure others could add more. Also note that I'm a gamer, I don't do any office work on my machine. I do however, do some slight graphic work, but nothing major, since I'm still learning.

Take your pick.

Win98 = Retro gaming, some stabilty issues, but will run most new games easily.

WinME = Don't touch it.

Win2k = Count retro out, awesome stability, almost all new games run perfectly, but sometimes need a bit of tweaking to increase performance.

WinXP = Some retro games will work using compatabilty mode, awesome stabilty (same kernel as 2k), almost all new games work perfectly with minimal tweaking. Bloated when you first install it, but what features you do not like can be turned off. Some people will argue that after you turn everything off your just running a glorified version of 2k, but honestly it runs games at a much better performance rate.

Don't use an OS that's nearly 5 years old.

'nuff said.

2K or XP. I use both.
