Registry Cleaner - Recommendation?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My Win95->Win98->Win98SE installation is getting sluggish. I have tried defragging, but I feel that the registry is getting bloated and would like to clean it.

I already have the Microsoft Regcleaner, it does not do much.

Do you have any good (and preferably free) recommendations?

Many different things can slow down a system, resources too low, not enough ram, too many things running at once, (which is associated with low resources.)

We need a little info on your system, ram you have, what programs are in start-up? When does this occur?

Here's one

You can also do a search and find many for free.

Check which programs are getting started when you turn on you computer. To find them do the followind

Start
Run
"msconfig" type this in without the quotes
click on the startup tab

compare the programs to the following and uncheck any unneeded programs.

If you've actually upgraded the OS from 95 to 98 to 98se without doing a clean install that could be part of the problem

I would recommend backing up and doing a clean wipe and install, but thats just me.

As for your question, I recommend RegCleaner.

TWEAKER:

I am familiar with the windows startup stuff and have already eliminated them from the equation. I have a clean install of 98 that is much "snappier", but I have hundreds of apps and a whole lot of settings installed in the old partition that I want to keep.

FWIW I am running a 1GHz PIII w/256MB RAM. I still want to clean my registry. I have done many HW and SW upgrades over the past few years, and am pretty sure that my registry is bloated as a result.

Thanks for the reference to the Microsoft RegCleaner, which, as I mentioned, I have already tried.

TECIL:

Thanks for the good words. As I said, I already have a clean-install Win98 that I use for testing purposes, but reinstalling al those apps is more than I am willing to deal with for now. Besides, I am planning to migrate to Win2000 soon, keeping win98 around for compatibility and testing purposes (don't like XP... UGH!).

Sorry about that, I was at work and looked up the one you already had! Anyway here are a few others to try out.

*Don't forget to backup your registry.*

http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm

http://www.webattack.com/get/regcleaner.shtml

Anyone of these will work.

You probably already know this but just in case something goes goes wrong,

Go to MS-DOS mode - Start||Shutdown||Restart in MS-Dos mode||OK. At the Prompt type in "cd c:\" without the quotes. Click "Enter". At the C:\ prompt, type in scanreg /restore or fix. (Note the space after scanreg). A screen will appear that will allow you to select one of the previous four days registries. Choose one and select "Restore". When all is done, back at the C:\ prompt type "exit" (again without the quotes) and Windows will reload.

Hope this helps.

Here is a trick I learned, If your software does not require any special dll files.

do a clean install to a new master hard drive.

copy over all the installed software folders from your slave drive to the program files folder on the new hard drive.

in c:/window/start menu/programs create one folder for each software product you want to show up when you use Start=>Programs

now creata a shortcut to the executables in each of those folders that you put in "program files" and copy that shortcut into each folder you set up in c:/window/start menu/programs

9 times out of 10 you can fuly execute tha program and you have not cluttered your registry.

Only thin is there you cannot use the contol panels add/remove feature to remove the programs, you have to delete the folders manually.
