Scholarships (Help plz)

I've decided to look for scholarships to alleviate the financial burden called college. I've already used FastWeb and I came up with around 30 matches. Almost all of them require essays.
My question is, should i use up my time writing essays just for a scholarship? If I don't get any money then it'll all be a waste of time. I'd appreciate any advice on any scholarship winners out there.
Also, are there any other good scholarship databases out there besides FastWeb?

your best source of scholarships will be the school you attend. if you narrow your schools down to a handful, then talk to the appropriate office (probably financial aid, or theyll refer you to the correct one). theyll come up with a list of ones you qualify for, although you still have to apply. please note that many will be school specific, and not transferable if you go elsewhere.
if you know exactly what school youll be attending, you have it made. just do the above, and apply for them all. well, i wouldnt bother with $100/year scholarships, that would be a waste of time. but i think most people with scholarships are like me, and received scholarships from the school itself. the big nationwide ones, except for a handful, dont get handed out to a lot of people. concentrate on the ones available at your school, less competition.

School doesn't start for another two weeks, so I wouldn't be able to go to my guidance counselor. What can I do now?

wait for school to open

Most of those scholarships don't get awarded till the end of the year anyway, so just be patient for now.

Hmmm...
Phone them and ask over the wire.
Although many scholarships are given out at the end of the year, it all depends upon the conditions for these scholarships. This includes requirement as well as due dates for applicants.
I don't imagine scholarships are much different down there as up here.
Hence, you should inquiry ASAP to find out what ones may be due sooner then later.
You miss the deadline..that is it, fini.

nfested: 1) the office personell at your high school only get a couple weeks off in the summer. they are there, trust me.
2) you need to contact the college, not your highschool.
3) most scholarships have a deadline of early spring, at the latest. you need to get started.

Are you a senior, N?

Nfested, unless you're some bizarre minority (like third-generation Inuit fisherman's son who happend to have an ancestor decorated in WW2 for pig wrestling) then you're probably going to have to write an essay.
All the scholarships I had that weren't based soley on academic acheivement -- well, they all required essays.
When you decide what college you want to go to, call that college's financial aid department. It's their job to help you find scholarships offered by the university or state. It will take time and effort on your part.

Not sure about your area, but back when I graduated they just had a new program come out called a+. The deal was, you sign a few papers, and if you keep atleast a c+ in all classes, you get a scholarship. Not sure if it was to community college, or if it was to some other, I didn't get to participate since it was for sophmores and prior only.
No essays involved.
To bad I couldn't have been a sophmore when they started. Oh well.

and assuming you are a senior, do you know where you're going to college yet?
and anyway, most of the essays they ask you to write are short, like 200 words or less, so its not like its a huge waste of time.

I am going to be a junior in highschool. I get good grades but a lot of people do so that doesn't help much.
Also, my guidance counselor refuses to work during the summer. I found that out when i wanted to change my schedule.

going to be a junior eh..
Like Cheese asked, you know what College you are going to?

Heh...why was it called A+ if all you had to do was keep a C+?

Because this is America.
'Nuff said.

Usually the essays ask for the same thing, you can use the same essay, just amend it for the scholarship you're applying to.
Also, community service helps A LOT. Or at least it does here in Florida. There's a nice scholarship my teachers are stressing, it's called Bright Futures, and it's sponsered by Florida Lottery. You need 75 hours for 100% scholoarship, there's a catch and I don't know the details. Of course it won't help you if you don't live in Florida...
Many other scholarships also require community service.
Good SAT scores help too... I'm a junior, after the SAT I'm going to start looking out for scholarships, thanks for reminding me...

Yeah, I'm taking the SAT this weekend on the 2nd. I'm worried, but at least it's in a friendly, comfortable environment at my own school.
If anyone needs SAT info/help go to
