FTP, XP Pro, and Shared Network Drives

Ok here is the situation.
I have a friend who has a network at his house of 5 computers. He stores stuff on each machine..and collectively probably about 200gb of data. All machines are using XP Pro. He wants to add a FTP server to the mix and have all of that data available to whoever FTP's in. Here is the problem...the server has 15gb hd and cant possibly fit all the data on there, so he has all of the other machines HD's shared out, and his server is mapped to them all. However, when he tries to FTP to a network drive remotely, it will not allow him access, or it wont see the network drive at all. He can FTP to a drive in the server, just not one that it is mapped to.
He says that his FTP programs runs as a windows service, and XP will not allow a service to access a network drive.
Any suggestions?

Try making a virtual path (in the ftp server software) to the network drive and make sure the users have permission to list dirs at the networked drive.
Which ftp server is he using?

He is using Serv-U for the FTP stuff. And if this makes any difference he is running a program called SolidShare to share internet access and do all other routing tasks (port mapping, DHCP, filtering, etc.).

I just tried it on my Win2k pc and it behaves really weird with networked drives. I change something, the files on the networked drive disappear, then I change it back and the files stay gone...
If I ever find out what causes it then I'll let you know

Ty sir, I'd appreciate that
If it makes any difference his version is registered... I was doing a little research on my own and it was mentioned that there may be a few differences between the trial and the registered version.
I dont have the URL with me, but I also came accross a page that gave good directions on setting up drive permissions... which is what I think his problem is... he doesnt have all of the share/drive permissions configured correctly

My version is registered too, I've been using it for about 6 months now. I know my permissions are set right but it just doesn't work all the time
Probably some stupid half-hidden setting somewhere...
