Win2k IRQ's

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Outlaw

I might have a "small" IRQ problem in Win2k.

Every once in a while (about once a week, but sometimes faster) my music (winamp) stops playing (it finishes the song, then loads the next one but doesn't start playing it), at the same time one of my HD's stops responding, a little while after that explorer stops responding and then all I can do is reset the pc (it doesn't freeze completely, I can still do CTRL-ALT-DEL and some other stuff).

The problem is not winamp, it does the HD freeze thing too without it. It's not the HD either, I replaced it with another one and it still does it. It is always the same drive that freezes though (connected to a PCI RAID controller).

I decided to check my IRQ's and found out that all my PCI cards and my AGP card are on the same IRQ (LOL).

After a bit of searching the forums, I found this:

It's not possible for you to assign new IRQ's in Windows 2000 after ACPI is already installed. ACPI installs all IRQ's on the same IRQ.(It's supposed to do that). It's also for the most part better than a non-ACPI setup.

If he's right, then I can't change the fact that everything is on the same IRQ, but is that a problem or not (since it does it automaticly)?

It could be my soundcard driver too though because I can make it happen really fast if I let winamp use the Waveout output function instead of the Crossfading Directsound output function I'm using now.

Some system specs:

mainboard: ECS K7S5A (with recent BIOS)
AGP card: Geforce 2 GTS (IRQ 11)
PCI slot 1: CNET/Davicom NIC (IRQ 11)
PCI slot 2: Realtek NIC (IRQ 11)
PCI slot 3: Pinnacle video capture card (unsupported in Win2k, disabled)
PCI slot 4: Highpoint 370 RAID controller (IRQ 11)
PCI slot 5: Creative SBLive 5.1 (IRQ 11)

Also on IRQ 11: PCI to USB open host controller (x2). Probably not important but I'll mention it anyway...

OS: Win2k with service pack 2.

Everything has latest drivers installed, I tried older drivers for the soundcard but that was a disaster, it just froze up every hour or so, Creative's drivers aparantly suck ass or something.

Sooo... if anyone knows how to get it to stop doing the sound/HD freeze, please tell me

EDIT: now that I think about it, maybe I should try moving the RAID controller away from the soundcard...
Other suggestions are still welcome though
