HELP: Windows Reloading! & Access violation at address 00000000

I am so exhasparated!
I am running WinNT 4.0 on an Inspiron Laptop.
Everytime I open certain programs (such as AIM, ColdFusion Studio, Acrobat Reader) the system does something along the lines of reloading Windows... It appears to refresh and reload the desktop, all windows on the desktop close, and all system extensions previously in the taskbar disappear. I can't figure out why, and it's terribly inconvenient.
[In a possibly related issue, everytime I open CFStudio 4.5, I get an error that reads "Access Violation at address 00000000. Read of address 00000000." and then the reload happens]
Please help.

First, install Service Pack 6.
