Crash everytime I run a game.

Ok, Im having a bit of a problem here. Im running Win 2000 pro- here's the problem:

Just about everytime I go to load a game that is stored on the harddrive, my system crashes. It happens with America's Army, Battlefield 1942 demo, Counterstrike, and everyother game I dont need a cd to run.

Here is the message I get on the blue screen:

KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Address BC7B923F base at BC769000, Datestamp 3d3478e4-NV4_disp.dll

Any idea of what is causing the games to make my system crash? The system is rock solid everyother time-- these crashes only happen when I try to play a game.

Thanks

ok, I just went and loaded up the battlefield 1942 demo expecting it to crash.. It did, but I got a different message on the bluescreen:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Address BC7B923F base at BC769000, Datestamp 3d3478e4-NV4_disp.dll

They both say something about NV4_disp.dll which I assume has something to do with your video card.
Try installing (or reinstalling) the latest drivers for it.

thanks alot tweak.

jeez I hate this kind of crap. I reinstalled the latest nvidia driver. that didnt help the matter.

my friend who was running a pirated copy of windows said he would get the same problem as the one that I am describing. could it be my copy of windows that is causing this?

thanks again

Okay ... turn off the computer and try getting inside and reseating the video card from its slot ... then try to run Windows under safe mode and do a complete scandisk of the system ...

If that fails, try using a different video card and see if the problem persists... and if that still fails, you may need to reformat and/or reinstall Windows 2000 ...

jeez, here I go sounding like an idiot, but I dont know how to run scandisc.

****!

I got a problem and its quite large.

I tried reseating my vid card. I did so and everything was hooked up well. Plugged everything back in and booted up the system.

IDE checks are all fine and then I get to the black screen with a grey bar at the bottom. The one that says windows is starting up or whatever. It makes it all the way and then I get to the WIndows 2000 pro startup screen. the one with the pretty windows logo and the blue bar near the middle that goes up as the system loads.

So, the blue bar is completely filled, and then my screen goes black and the monitor stops picking up a signal. Uh oh.

I try plugging in the monitor again (to the vid card), and that doesnt help. Damn. I restart and get to the same point, and the video dissappears again. No signal to the monitor. Doh.

I pull out the vid card and reseat it once again. I plugged everything in again and gave the system power. Same exact thing as the last 2 boots!

So, I hit reset and this time I hit F8 to enter windows setup. I look at the options and try something that was called VGA mode, I believe. That worked! But, my picture is all shitty. See the enclosed screenshot to see what I mean- everything is screwy.

Well, Im gonna try to reboot in a normal mode, but till then, could someone diagnose my problem?? Im totally lost.

by the way- the graphics card is a Hercules Geforce 2, 32mb.

Thanks so much

Ok, I tried to start windows normally. Same problem as before.

Then I tried safe mode. It took a hell of a long time to load windows completely (I was on the screen that has 'safe mode' written in each corner, and there was a a small windows dialogue box in the middle telling me that windows was loading), but I am running in safe mode. This is good.

What now?

Ok.

Shut down in safemode and started up to see how thing would go in regular mode.

IT WORKED! Here I am, in normal mode, every thing is just fine.

Can anyone tell me what you think might have gone wrong? That was quite a nice little scare, and I would really like to know what caused it.

Thanks

Windows went wrong

VGA mode is supposed to look like that, you only get 16 colors I think.

Safe mode is very slow to load, like you said, that's normal too.

Maybe windows resetted some setting when you went to safe mode, and that's why it worked again, maybe not though, pretty hard to tell
