How do I reformat my comp?

I want to start from scratch with my computer because it has a lot of stuff on it. I searched for a format disk in the bunch of stuff Dell gave me when they sent me the computer, but I did not find one. I found a reinstall WinXP CD and some other stuff.

I have Windows XP Home Edition.

With XP you don't use a floppy. You have to go into your Bios and make your CD ROM your main booting device, then install the CD in there, and boot from it.

Follow the instructions to format your HDs, partition them if you want to, etc....

Ok I got up to the part with partitions. I want everything deleted from my computer and I want to start clean.

I see two partitions: FAT32, and NTFS(something like that). It says that there is an OS already installed in those partitions and there would be errors if I installed a new OS.

Can I delete these partitions, then make a new partition to install WindowsXP? Would deleting those existing partitions mess up my computer?

I dunno about XP (should be the same, I think) ... but with 2k you just delete the partions and then re-partion the drive. In 2k you boot from CD too.

I'm new to the whole IT/Tech Help thing so I'm still learning

Boot from the CD and delete all the partitions. the win xp OS will run best with all NTFS partitions

Ok i formatted my comp. Whenever I restart my comp I get a screen that tells me to select an OS to boot from and I get two choices and they are both Windows XP home edition.

Wtf?

did you completley reformat the hard disks? it seems like your first OS is still there.

get a dos promt (I always use a win98 startup disk) and type "fdisk /mbr". If your mbr is screwed up, this will fix it

Except dos doesn't recognize NTFS partitions.

When I used my reinstall CD and went to the screen where I am suppose to do stuff with partitions, I deleted the two partitions that were there. There was a FAT32 one and a NTFS one. This left me with a "unpartitioned space" selection, so i selected that to reinstall windows on. I thought I deleted all my partitions but that on.
