The Thing...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Well, as I was browsing at Best Buy, I saw that this game was already out, so I bought it (loved the movie, and it looked great on E3).

Anyway, I'm installing it now ... I'm guessing it's gonna be a lot like the Half Life single player campaign ... if not better....

Anyone else have it?

Posted by: Spider

Nope. Let me know if it's any good.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

blah ... things are NOT looking good at all ... the save system ****in sucks ... there are like specific save points where you can save the game... like a console game *sigh* I guess this was really meant to be a console game after all ... visited the TTG forums and they mentioned a registry hack to enable save anywhere ... I dunno, the game looks great but the save system is really a downer ...

:edit: just found the registry hack ... off to try it again

Just in case someone has already bought the game and does not like the save point system (yeah, some of you like it, but there are some like me who think it's braindead for a PC version ), here are the instructions:

-----------------------------------------

1. Run regedit and go to HKLM/Software/Computer Artworks/TheThing/1.0
2. Create a string value called "DoInGameLoadSave" and set it to 1.
3. Load Game and Save Game now appear in the options menu.

Note: Don't use Load as it doesn't always work properly (go back to the main menu instead), but Save should be fine, except you don't get a save-point icon and the game will be called "TestGameName".

Weak.

You damn PC gamers are all alike. Can't take any kind of pressure!

Posted by: Canis Lupus

It's kinda inconvenient to leave the computer running while I go out and have a life, just so I don't lose my progress in the game

Of course, if you were one of those play-all-day console gamers, it wouldn't be much of a problem

harsh

You tell him!

why, back when I was a kid, you had to get through all 8 levels of Mario without any save points!! Then you had to play the game again and it was even harder!!!11

Thats right! I got fired because I stayed home playing mario!

"thank you, but our princess is in another castle" nearly drove me insane! I had to check myself into the hopsital for that one. I was seeing those damn toadstools everytime I closed my eyes!!!

Whoa, Im gonna order some of those shirts, they are cool. I like the WASD shirt and the "Campers Suck" best. The PS2 Controller and Mouse one are cool too.

I got The Thing too, haven't tried it yet.
The save point system reminds me of Resident Evil, I'm just gonna keep it the way it is

Posted by: JANNA

i think that save point style games are stupid. nothing i hate worse and something that will make me not buy a game is lame @ss save point style of play. save points are something that should be mandated illegal and never to be used in a video game. if u prefer playing thru a level without saving no one is stopping u from ur obsession with painful gameplay. just dont force it on the rest of us that hate doing things over and over and over and over and over and over trying to get the perfect timing jump crap that always happens in a FPS single play game whic is usually as far from a save point as they can make it. that sort of thing kills a game and makes a fun game into a tediuos bore. i was going to get The Thing but after what laggy said its off my list for xbox. not even going to waste a rental on it.

Hear hear Janna. My thoughts exactly on the mater!

Posted by: Outlaw

Games like Resident Evil are crap without the savepoint system, if you can just save after every corner, then you're not gonna be scared as hell anymore because some monster just jumps around a corner, you can do it again anyway.

If someone makes a savepoint system, it's usually good.

Of course that's just my opinion, I understand your point too but I don't agree with it at all

Posted by: JANNA

no one is forcing u to save every two steps u can save or nt save if u want to. what i detest is games that force u to chose a playstyle because one small segment of testers think its cool to have to play thru the entire thing without saving. so they think "yeah!! lets do it like this!!"
pure horsecrap.

Posted by: JANNA

i dont have time for games that i cant stop when i need to. ive got a life outside the comp and puter games. having to keep playing till i get to a save point just sux when u dont have time to get to the next and all the work u have done so far is wasted. it makes the game unfun. it makes me to not want to play which is a good way to loose customers like me that have lives and like to play the games but dont have any desire to play an anally-retentative gamestyle. yeah save points made sense way back in the day of NES and such when game coding storage space was at a premium and every bit counted. but today with huge game card storage and the advent of storage drives in some current and upcoming consoles save point systems make no sense. just cuz it was done "back in the day" doesnt mean it was cool or a good thing even then. it was just as irritating then as it is now.

I completely agree with JANNA.

For an FPS, Janna is right. Savepoints are dumb. Usually the same for platform games as well. But for puzzley type games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, its fine. If you feel the need to save often/whenever you want. Just go back to the save point. Simple as that.

But yeah, for an FPS where you have to make those annoying perfect jumps over ominous black pits, it's a stupid system.

Uh huh ... imagine massive RPGs like Baldur's Gate II having save points, hehe ...

Anyway, the save point system to me is an inconvenience ... granted I wasn't bothered by it when I played FF8, but it's still an annoyance when you only play 1-2 hours a day...

That's why I said games like Resident Evil. Save Points in Baldur's Gate II would be just insane.

Though in FF games it was never really a problem for me since you could always save in the world map no matter where you were.

I have played The Thing on PC and X Box. I agree to a degree about the save points, but thats what keeps you moving. The feature I like best is if they dont trust you, you can point the gun at their head and they will do what you want. (so it sounds sick? who cares?) I think the game is awesome. Love the movie. The station in the game looks the same as the movie. And come on!...the tape recorder you find with the message....excellent!

I got The Thing for the Xbox for Christmas and still haven't got around to playing it with all these other games. I don't mind the save point system for games like that either.
